Inner-Line: A Linear Micro-Renovation Landscape Experiment in Hutong

The Pitch

Location

Inner-Line is located in the center of Beijing, named Tiaozhou Hutong. This narrow street is located in the most prosperous area of Beijing, adjacent to Tian 'anmen Square in the north, a famous Chinese cultural street in the east that is visited by countless international tourists every day, a street of cultural relics in the west, and adjacent to the business district, and a large area of the old city in the south. The urban structure of Beijing is ancient and complex, but the main axis is obvious and diverges outwards in a ring. This site is located on the second ring road, which can be said to be the most central location.

Beijing Hutong Existing Condition

Background

This Hutong and Dashilan community have a history of several hundred years, also retains the early model of a traditional courtyard building, but this model is different from courtyards in Dongdan area, Tiaozhou Hutong's Dashilan community is the place where actors and vendors to dwell in history, because of their low social status in China at that time, so many blocks relatively cramped. The whole Dashilan community is the best-preserved urban texture of Qing Dynasty so far, but the current living environment has brought a lot of problems to the residents of the whole community. Narrow aisles, irregularly placed vehicles, and daily necessities make the traffic in the Hutongs more inconvenient, and the unreasonable planning of garbage has severely reduced the quality of the environment.

Tranditional Urban Form of Dashilan Community

Program

Due to the historical and cultural environment, there are lots of limitations about this project, and the linear street space is compacted which increases the difficulties of the renovation, so I hope I can use minimal intervention to puts forward the concept of micro - renovation. First of all, through the ground pavement and elevation pavement to guide the whole space and functional partition, then using landscape installations to increase the complexity of space, and finally applying the concept of this street to the whole community, like an organism, from small cells transform to the whole body. In this project, I hope to explore the potential of Hutong through landscape means, and make Hutong adaptable to modern urban development through micro-renovation, and to retain this ancient residential form to some extent. It is my goal to activate the entire community while improving the environmental quality of residents and to plan and utilize the existing space more reasonably.
